Apple Filing Protocol to Be Fully Removed from macOS in Future Updates
Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), one of the earliest file-sharing technologies introduced by Apple shortly after the release of the Macintosh in 1984, is now being phased out from macOS. As part of a broader shift towards open standards and modern networking, Apple officially deprecated AFP support in macOS Sequoia 15.5. Historically, AFP enabled seamless file sharing across Mac networks through proprietary protocols like AppleTalk and AppleShare, predating the widespread adoption of Internet-based protocols. With its imminent discontinuation, users are encouraged to transition to more current sharing options such as SMB and AFP alternatives, reflecting Apples move toward modern, secure, and efficient network file sharing methods. This change marks the end of an era for early Mac networking technology, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of macOSs infrastructure.
