Ethereum Researcher Behind Danksharding Unveils Proposal to Expand Network Capacity with 100x Gas Limit Increase
Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist, known for pioneering Danksharding, has proposed a groundbreaking plan to scale Ethereums transaction capacity by increasing its gas limit 100-fold over four years. The proposal, EIP-9698, outlines a structured approach to gradually raise the gas limit from its current 36 million to 3.6 billion through a deterministic growth schedule tied to beacon chain epochs. If implemented, this expansion could theoretically enable Ethereum to process up to 2,000 transactions per second (TPS), a significant leap from its current ~20 TPS throughput. The phased approach begins in June 2025, allowing node operators and developers to adapt incrementally while aligning with anticipated hardware advancements. Feist emphasizes that the predictable scaling mechanism would enhance Ethereums competitiveness against high-throughput chains like Solana, which currently processes over 1,000 TPS. The proposal comes amid ongoing network upgrades, including the upcoming Pectra hard fork in May and discussions around a fourfold gas limit increase in the Fusaka hard fork later in 2025. By addressing scalability constraints, EIP-9698 aims to solidify Ethereums position in the $16.1T tokenization race and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.
