EUs Groundbreaking Device Labels to Revolutionize Smartphone Repair and Battery Transparency
Starting June 20, 2025, the European Union will require all smartphones, tablets, cordless phones, and feature phones sold within its borders to include a new, standardized label inside the device packaging. These labels will provide consumers with clear, easy-to-understand letter grades (A to G) for key factors such as repairability, durability, battery longevity, energy efficiency, and protection against dust and water ingress. This initiative aims to boost transparency, promote sustainable consumption, and encourage manufacturers to prioritize longer-lasting, easier-to-repair devices. Batteries, for example, must retain at least 80% capacity after 800 full charge cycles, and devices must meet enhanced scratch and drop protections above minimum standards. Additionally, manufacturers are now obligated to provide replacement spare parts and deliver operating system updates within six months of source code availability. Notably, rollable display devices and already marketed products before June 20 are excluded from this mandate. This regulatory move is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and optimize the use and recycling of critical raw materials, marking a major step forward in the EUs commitment to environmental sustainability and consumer rights in the electronics market.
